In short: Before Napoleon I departed for his permanent exile on Saint Helena, he spent one final night at the Château de Rambouillet. This historic estate, which served as a summer residence for French presidents for over a century, holds architectural remnants of the Emperor's personal life and imperial era.

During the reign of Napoleon I, the Château de Rambouillet was part of his 'liste civile', a collection of government-owned properties available to the head of state. The Emperor visited the estate several times, with his final recorded stay occurring on the night of 29–30 June 1815, just as he was beginning his journey toward exile.

The architecture of the château still preserves specific traces of the Napoleonic era. Visitors can find a Pompeian-style bathroom featuring a small bathtub, as well as a specialized balcony designed to connect the Emperor's private apartment with that of his second wife, Empress Marie-Louise. A pair of rows of bald cypress trees once formed the Allée de Cyprès chauves de Louisiane within the estate.

The estate's history is marked by significant political transitions. Following the fall of Napoleon III in 1870, the property was leased to the duke of la Trémoille until 1883. It later became a summer retreat for French presidents starting in February 1896, when President Félix Faure chose the site for his family's seasonal residence, a tradition that continued until 2009.

While the château's footprint remains largely pentagonal despite the loss of its eastern wing during Napoleon's time, the surrounding landscape has also faced upheaval. In December 1999, Hurricane Lothar caused significant damage to the park, destroying the historic bald cypress avenue that had stood since 1810.
