How a Calculated Rise to Power Ended the Carolingian Era in West Francia
In short: This documentary traces the transition from Charlemagne's fractured empire to the establishment of the Capetian dynasty. It examines the strategic maneuvering, military service, and political alliances that allowed the Robertians to replace the Carolingians as the rulers of the Franks.
Following the death of Louis the Pious, the Carolingian Empire suffered a decline, marked by the Treaty of Verdun and a subsequent erosion of central royal authority. This power vacuum allowed regional magnates to gain influence. The Robertians, a prominent family, rose to prominence through figures like Robert the Strong and Odo, who gained prestige by defending Paris from Viking incursions.
The transition was a gradual process rather than an abrupt takeover. While Hugh the Great opted against taking the throne, his son Hugh Capet spent years cultivating essential support from the clergy, the nobility, and the Ottonian power structure. Upon the death of Louis V in 987, Hugh Capet was selected as the new monarch, marking the start of a dynasty that would define French history.
