How a Prussian military mission transformed the Chilean Army into a modern regional power
In short: Following the War of the Pacific, Chile sought to overhaul its military by systematically adopting Prussian doctrine, technology, and organization. This massive emulation project, led by German officers, fundamentally reshaped the nation's defense, creating a professionalized force that would influence Chilean politics and strategy for over a century.
The push for modernization began after the War of the Pacific, when military leaders like Emilio Sotomayor and Patricio Lynch identified critical flaws in strategic planning and training. To address these, Chile looked toward the Prussian military model. In 1886, the government brought in Captain Emil Körner, a veteran of the Berlin Kriegsakademie, to lead the effort. Körner and 36 other Prussian officers were tasked with training cadets at the Military Academy and standardizing technical education across the force.
This transformation was comprehensive, touching everything from uniforms and marching styles to complex logistics and general staff organization. A central pillar was the 1886 founding of the War Academy, designed to elevate scientific and technical instruction. By 1893, Körner helped establish a permanent General Staff to oversee military affairs during both peace and war. The era also saw a massive arms race with Argentina, during which Chile purchased 100,000 Mauser rifles and significant Krupp artillery, cementing its shift toward modern, mechanized warfare.
The influence of this period proved remarkably durable. In 1900, Chile became the first Latin American nation to implement compulsory military service, aiming to create a structure that could rapidly expand with well-trained reserves. Later, in the 1980s, the army formulated Plan Alcázar, a restructuring effort that moved away from traditional divisions toward smaller, mobile units to address the country's lack of strategic depth. Today, the Chilean Army remains one of the most technologically advanced forces in the region, a legacy of its century-long commitment to professionalization and imported doctrine.
