In short: While many Americans celebrate with family, for many troops, the holiday is a time of sacrifice and hardship. From desperate river crossings to failed naval bombardments, certain military actions on December 25th have fundamentally altered the trajectory of the nation's most defining conflicts.

In the winter of 1776, the Continental Army faced a crisis of morale. After enduring multiple losses, General George Washington's troops were driven from New York and New Jersey into Pennsylvania. To restore faith in the cause of independence, Washington launched a surprise mission against Hessian troops stationed in Trenton, New Jersey. He theorized that the enemy would be unprepared and groggy following their Christmas celebrations, especially amidst a brewing winter storm.

The gamble paid off. On Christmas night, Washington's troops waded across the icy Delaware River. By dawn on December 26, approximately 2,400 frozen Continental soldiers pushed into Trenton, catching the enemy by surprise. The Hessians surrendered within an hour and a half, a victory known as the Battle of Trenton that revived colonial hope and lifted the spirits of the struggling troops.

Not every Christmas military action was a success. During the American Civil War, the Union attempted to seize Fort Fisher, the last Confederate port on the Atlantic Ocean. The initial attempt on Christmas 1864 was a debacle. A Union plan to use explosives to breach the fort's walls backfired, destroying their own warship and alerting the Confederates. Subsequent heavy gunfire on Christmas Eve and landing attempts on Christmas morning failed to damage the fort's artillery, forcing a Union retreat.

These historical snapshots remind us that the holiday often coincides with periods of intense conflict, serving as a backdrop for both desperate gambles and significant military failures.
