Beyond the shadow of a famous name, Coretta Scott King forged her own path.
In short: Often remembered primarily as the wife of a civil rights icon, Coretta Scott King was a formidable activist in her own right. From the front lines of the Montgomery bus boycott to the halls of the U.S. Senate, her lifelong commitment to justice reshaped the American political and social landscape.
Born in Marion, Alabama, in 1927, Coretta Scott pursued higher education at Antioch College before moving to Boston in 1951 to study voice at the New England Conservatory of Music. It was there she met Martin Luther King, Jr., a theology student at Boston University. They married in 1953 and eventually settled in Montgomery, Alabama, where she became deeply involved in the burgeoning civil rights movement of the 1950s and 1960s.
Following her husband’s assassination in 1968, King’s work intensified. She established an institution in Atlanta dedicated to the principles of nonviolent social change, which served as a hub for her ongoing advocacy. Her influence extended into literature and education as well; in 1969, she launched an annual award to celebrate African American authors of children's books, later expanding the honor to include illustrators in 1979.
Her political impact remained potent decades later. In 1986, she submitted a formal statement to the U.S. Senate opposing the federal judgeship nomination of Jeff Sessions, arguing that he had used his authority to suppress the voting rights of Black citizens. This letter resurfaced in 2017 during a Senate debate, sparking a national controversy when a senator was rebuked for attempting to read her words aloud. King died in 2006, leaving behind a legacy that transcended her role as a spouse, cementing her status as a central figure in the struggle for equality.
