The crusade that turned a spiritual war into a land grab

Crusade in the Heart of Europe: The Destruction of the Cathars · 27:51 · Video: History Mapped Out · Watch at the source

In short: In 1209, the Papacy launched a campaign into the heart of Europe. While framed as a religious purge against the Cathars, it served as a blueprint for state expansion and the centralization of French power.

The Albigensian Crusade targeted Languedoc, a wealthy region defined by its urban communes and unique Occitan culture. The conflict was driven by three rival powers: the French crown, the Kingdom of Aragon, and the Counts of Toulouse. By defeating the Aragonese at Muret and absorbing Languedoc into the French crown via the Treaty of Paris, the crusade laid the foundation for a centralized France.

This era marked a pivotal shift where religious rhetoric became an instrument of state expansion. It saw the birth of the Inquisition under Pope Gregory IX's Dominican tribunals—a model of persecution exported from Spain to the New World. The campaign concluded with the destruction of cultural diversity in favor of uniformity, exemplified by the mass execution of Cathars at Montségur.
