How two revolutions in a single year transformed Russia into a global superpower
In 1917, Russia underwent a violent political metamorphosis. From the collapse of the Romanov dynasty to the rise of the Bolsheviks, a series of rapid-fire upheavues dismantled an empire and set the stage for a century of global conflict and ideological struggle.
The year 1917 was defined by two distinct seismic shifts. The first, the February Revolution, effectively terminated centuries of Tsarist rule. This collapse was driven by the growing unpopularity of Tsar Nicholas II, fueled by the devastating impact of Russia's involvement in World War One and the influence of the Siberian mystic Rasputin. As chaos erupted on the streets of Petrograd, the Tsar was forced to abdicate, leaving a power vacuum in the heart of the empire.
In the months that followed, Russia struggled to find stability. A Provisional Government attempted to steer the nation through a period of intense volatility, including the July Days riots and the military revolt known as the Kornilov Affair. Alexander Kerensky, the Socialist Prime Minister who was once viewed as a savior, found himself unable to manage the mounting economic chaos or the dwindling public support. This instability provided the opening necessary for a more radical faction to seize control.
The second wave, the October Revolution, saw the Bolsheviks launch a successful coup. Orchestrated by Leon Trotsky and led by Vladimir Lenin, this movement overthrew the Provisional Government and established Bolshevik rule. The transition was far from peaceful; a brutal civil war erupted, resulting in the deaths of more than 10 million Russians. This period of violence included the July 1918 execution of Tsar Nicholas II and his family in Yekaterinburg. From this wreckage, the Soviet Union was officially formed in 1922, emerging as a central player in 20th-century geopolitics.
