The American potato's first roots were planted in this town
In short: Before it became a global staple, the first potato in the United States was sown in a common field in Derry, New Hampshire. This town of history and astronauts also served as a quiet sanctuary for one of America's most celebrated poets.
Derry's history is deeply intertwined with the broader settlement of New England. Following 1719, Scots-Irish settlers arrived here within Londonderry, leading to Derry's official establishment during 1827. It was named after the city of Derry in Ireland, mirroring the naming convention of its parent township.
The town has served as a hub for diverse industries and cultural figures. It was once a center for linen and leather-making before the textile industry shifted south in the 20th century. During the early 1900s, it was a farming community where poet Robert Frost lived with his family from 1900 to 1911. His farm remains a National Historic Landmark today. Additionally, Derry is known as "Spacetown" because it is the birthplace of Alan Shepard, the first American astronaut in space.
Geographically and demographically, Derry is the most populous community in Rockingham County. While it experienced a massive population boom following World War II—driven by its proximity to Boston and the construction of Interstate 93—growth has remained essentially unchanged since 2000. Today, it maintains a unique political identity, leaning Republican in presidential elections and serving as a notable node in the state's transit and educational landscape, housing two of America's oldest private schools.
The town's infrastructure reflects its evolving role in New England. Although the Boston and Maine Railroad's Manchester and Lawrence route currently serves as a disused path, government research has investigated potential restoration. This balance between its agrarian past, industrial history, and modern suburban identity defines Derry's character as a cornerstone of southern New Hampshire.
