In short: Dick Enberg was a broadcasting institution whose career spanned sixty years, covering everything from the Olympics to the Super Bowl. Known for his signature catchphrases and an unparalleled versatility across sports, he became the voice of generations, defining the rhythm of American athletics until his retirement in 2016.

Born in 1935 in Mount Clemens, Michigan, Dick Enberg built a career that transcended specific sports, moving seamlessly between college basketball, professional football, and Major League Baseball. His rise to prominence began with a pivotal stint calling UCLA basketball games, a nine-year period during which the Bruins secured eight NCAA titles. Enberg often cited the 1968 'Game of the Century'—where the University of Houston snapped UCLA's 47-game winning streak—as the most historically significant event he ever covered.

Enberg was celebrated for his distinctive vocabulary, most notably his exclamation 'Oh my!' and his home run call, 'touch 'em all.' These phrases became synonymous with his broadcasting style, eventually serving as the title for his 2004 autobiography. His professional journey was marked by high-profile partnerships with figures like Al McGuire, Merlin Olsen, and Don Drysdale, and he held roles across major networks including NBC, CBS, and ESPN. Beyond the booth, he was a man of diverse interests, having earned a doctorate in health sciences from Indiana University.

His career concluded with a final chapter as the television announcer for the San Diego Padres, a role he held for nearly a decade before retiring in October 2016. Enberg passed away in December 2017 at his home in La Jolla, California, at the age of 82. While an official cause of death was not immediately determined, his wife, Barbara, noted he appeared to be preparing for a flight when he died. His legacy remains that of a versatile storyteller who brought the intensity of the game to millions of viewers for over half a century.
