In short: The 2020 film Dolittle was a star-studded reimagining of a literary classic that stumbled spectacularly. Despite a massive cast and a Victorian setting, the project faced significant creative hurdles, including extensive late-stage revisions, ultimately resulting in a substantial financial loss and critical panning that defined its legacy in cinema history.

Released in January 2020, Dolittle was the third major cinematic iteration of the character created by Hugh Lofting. While previous versions were distributed by 20th Century Fox, this production was helmed by Universal Pictures. The film aimed to blend live-action performances with a vast array of CGI creatures, featuring Robert Downey Jr. as the titular veterinarian who communicates with animals.

The production process was notoriously difficult. Announced in 2017, the film underwent principal photography in the United Kingdom throughout 2018. However, following poor reception during initial test screenings, the studio ordered three weeks of additional filming in the spring of 2019. These revisions were overseen by director Jonathan Liebesman and writer Chris McKay, representing a significant shift from the original vision led by director Stephen Gaghan.

The financial outcome was stark. With a reported loss between $50 million and $100 million, the film was widely considered a box-office failure, grossing $251 million worldwide. Critics were largely unimpressed, and the project earned six Golden Raspberry Award nominations, winning for Worst Remake, Rip-off or Sequel. Interestingly, due to the global COVID-19 pandemic disrupting the theatrical landscape, it still managed to rank as the seventh highest-grossing film of 2020.

The narrative follows Dr. Dolittle as he emerges from seclusion to save a poisoned Queen Victoria. Alongside a young apprentice, he embarks on a quest to find a magical fruit, navigating conflicts with a rival doctor and a treacherous politician. Despite the star power of actors like Antonio Banderas and Michael Sheen, the film remains a case study in how high-concept blockbusters can falter under the weight of production instability.
