The Arctic Convoys: How Allied Ships Supplied Russia Through Hellish Conditions

Fighting Icebergs and Nazis: Churchill’s Fleets To Russia · 36:57 · Video: History Hit · Watch at the source

In short: Dan Snow explores the history of the Arctic Convoys, a vital World War II mission to supply the Soviet Union. This documentary examines the immense risks taken by crews who braved extreme weather and constant German attacks to deliver essential materials to Murmansk and Archangel.

Beginning in August 1941 with Operation Dervish, the Arctic Convoys were established to provide the Soviet Union with food, fuel, and military equipment following the German invasion. Winston Churchill initiated this support to ensure the USSR remained a fighting force against Germany on the Eastern Front.

Between 1941 and 1945, 78 convoys navigated the North Atlantic. Sailors faced temperatures as low as -30 degrees Celsius, gale-force winds, and icebergs. Because the routes passed near German-occupied Norway, merchant vessels were frequent targets for U-boats and air raids. Ultimately, the mission resulted in the loss of 87 merchant ships, 18 Royal Navy vessels, and over 3,000 lives.
