The Italo-Turkish War of 1911–1912 was one of the final classic imperial wars fought between great powers over colonial territories. While fought primarily in Ottoman Libya between the Italian Army and Ottoman-led Senussi forces, the conflict offered a startling glimpse into the upcoming First World War. It featured early iterations of modern military technology, including the use of combat aircraft, artillery, trenches, and even motorboat attacks.
By examining this period, we see the transition from 19th-century imperial expansion to the total warfare of the 20th century, marking the dawn of the first land, sea, and air wars.
