From a begging monk to an emperor who ruled for 30 years

Founding the Ming Dynasty: Zhu Yuanzhang, Emperor Hongwu · 50:27 · Video: History of China · Watch at the source

In short: How does an illiterate orphan, forced into a monastery to escape starvation, become the most powerful man in China? The story of Zhu Yuanzhang is a brutal masterclass in survival, moving from a wandering mendicant to a warlord who dismantled a dynasty and forged a new empire.

Born in 1328 as Zhu Chongba, the future Emperor Hongwu lived a life defined by extreme deprivation. His family was pushed into destitution by rent collectors and a devastating plague in the 1340s that killed his father and eldest brother. At age 16, he entered a Buddhist monastery near Fengyang not out of piety, but as a desperate means to avoid starvation. For years, he lived as a wandering mendicant, begging for food in regions where central authority had collapsed due to drought and famine.

His trajectory shifted in 1352 when he joined the rebel forces of Guo Zixing. Rising from the ranks of plebeian bandits, Zhu Yuanzhang became second-in-command. He navigated complex internal politics, eventually securing his position through a strategic marriage to Guo's adopted daughter, Princess Ma.

By 1355, following Guo's death, he took command of the rebel army. As he moved toward the Yangtze River delta, he demonstrated remarkable foresight by seeking out educated gentry to teach him the Chinese language, history, and Confucian Classics. In 1368, after defeating his rivals and seizing Nanjing from the Mongol Yuan dynasty, he declared himself emperor under the reign name Hongwu. His rule was characterized by a ruthless centralization of power. He instituted sweeping military, administrative, and educational reforms while conducting bloody purges to eliminate dissent. Though often viewed as a harsh ruler who executed thousands, his foundations enabled the Ming dynasty to rule for nearly 300 years, overseeing significant economic growth and a flourishing of the arts.
