In short: Fred Hampton was a rising star in the Black Panther Party who unified disparate groups into a powerful Rainbow Coalition. His ability to organize across racial and class lines made him a primary target for the FBI, culminating in a violent, state-sanctioned raid that ended his life at age 21.

Born in 1948, Fred Hampton began his activism early, leading NAACP youth chapters and fighting for integrated public facilities in Maywood, Illinois. By 1968, he joined the Black Panther Party, where he quickly rose to deputy chairman of the Illinois chapter. Hampton was a gifted communicator, launching community service projects like free medical clinics and breakfast programs for children. These initiatives were so effective that they inspired the USDA to eventually expand its own national school breakfast efforts.

Hampton’s most ambitious achievement was the creation of the Rainbow Coalition. He bridged deep divides by forming alliances between the Black Panthers, the Puerto Rican Young Lords, the Poor White Young Patriots, and various Chicago street gangs. By focusing on shared economic and social struggles, he created a multiracial front that threatened the status quo. FBI director J. Edgar Hoover viewed Hampton as a dangerous 'messiah' capable of unifying militant movements, leading the bureau to monitor him closely through the COINTELPRO program.

The FBI utilized an informant, William O’Neal, to infiltrate the party and provide floor plans of Hampton’s residence. On December 4, 1969, police raided the apartment, killing Hampton and fellow Panther Mark Clark. While authorities initially claimed a shootout occurred, later investigations revealed that police fired 99 shots compared to only one from the Panthers. The survivors were initially charged with attempted murder, but these were eventually dropped. In 1982, a wrongful death lawsuit resulted in a $1.85 million settlement, and many scholars now characterize the event as a deliberate assassination orchestrated by the FBI to neutralize a potent political threat.
