From a blood-clotted birth to the ruler of the world's largest land empire.

Genghis Khan: the Legendary Conqueror of the Mongolian Empire · 11:53 · Video: World History Encyclopedia · Watch at the source

In short: This video examines the rise of Temujin, the man who became Genghis Khan. It traces his transformation from a child born with an omen of greatness to the leader who united the Mongol tribes and forged the largest contiguous empire in history.

Born Temujin in 1162 or 1167 CE to parents Hoelum and Yisugei, the future Khan arrived with a blood clot in his hand, interpreted as a sign of his destiny. After defeating rivals including the Tartars, Kereyids, Naimans, and Merkids, he was proclaimed Genghis Khan—or Universal Leader—at a 1206 Mongol conference.

Leveraging traditional Mongol mastery of horsemanship and archery, he expanded his reach from the Caspian Sea to the Sea of Japan, aiming to conquer China, then Asia's wealthiest state. He died on August 18, 1227, from an illness potentially linked to a fall from his horse, and was laid to rest in a secret, unmarked tomb.
