How Gorbachev's attempt to save the Soviet Union inadvertently triggered its total collapse

Gorbachev's USSR: The Events That Led To The Collapse Of The Soviet Union | M.A.D World | Timeline · 51:45 · Video: Timeline - World History Documentaries · Watch at the source

In short: This documentary examines the final years of the Soviet Union, focusing on Mikhail Gorbachev's failed attempts at economic and political reform. It tracks the rapid disintegration of Soviet power across Eastern Europe and the internal pressures that ultimately ended the Cold War.

Mikhail Gorbachev introduced two signature policies to revitalize the struggling Russian economy: perestroika, or 'restructuring,' and glasnost, meaning 'openness.' Despite these efforts to foster a more liberal state, the policies failed to satisfy a starving, impatient population. As the central government moved away from its historical practice of crushing dissent, Eastern European nations began holding free elections and breaking away from Soviet control.

The collapse accelerated as the Berlin Wall fell and various Soviet republics sought independence. By 1992, every republic had successfully broken away, marking the end of the Soviet Union and the communist experiment. While some transitions were relatively peaceful, others were marked by violence, such as the uprising in Romania that culminated in the execution of President Ceaușescu and his wife on Christmas Day 1989.
