The peace treaty that the victors signed, but the defeated refused
In short: In 1920, the Allies finalized the Treaty of Sèvres to dismantle the Ottoman Empire. This video explores the terms of that pact and why the rising Turkish Nationalist Movement, led by Mustafa Kemal, rejected it, sparking a period of intense conflict.
The Treaty of S<0xE1><0xB8><0x87>èvres, signed on August 10, 1920, aimed to abolish the Ottoman Empire and forced Turkey to renounce rights over North Africa and Arab Asia. The agreement proposed a fragmented landscape: an independent Armenia, an autonomous Kurdistan, and Greek control over the Aegean islands and parts of the Anatolian coast.
However, the treaty was met with fierce resistance. While the Ottoman government signed the pact, the Turkish Nationalist Movement under Mustafa Kemal refused to accept its terms. This defiance, set against the backdrop of the ongoing Greco-Turkish War, eventually led to the treaty being replaced by the Treaty of Lausanne in 1923.
