How a rainbow over a field created a legendary football dynasty
In short: In 1923, an unexpected rainbow appeared over Moiliili Field after an upset victory. This celestial event prompted local reporters to nickname the University of Hawaiʻi athletic teams the "Rainbows," sparking a legacy that would eventually see the program reach the Sugar Bowl.
The program's identity was forged in the early 1920s. After playing its first intercollegiate game against Nevada on Christmas Day in 1920, the team achieved its first collegiate victory against Pomona in 1922. However, it was the 1923 upset of Oregon State that cemented the "Rainbows" moniker after a rainbow appeared over Moiliili Field.
The team's early dominance was defined by the "Wonder Teams" of 1924–25. Under coach Otto Klum, the Rainbows completed back-to-back undefeated seasons, outscoring opponents 606–29 across 18 games. This era established a foundation of excellence that survived various challenges, including a four-year hiatus from 1942 to 1945 caused by the United States' entry into World War II.
The program has experienced dramatic highs and lows, from the brink of abolition in 1961 due to financial struggles to the historic success of the 2007 season. In 2007, led by quarterback Colt Brennan, the Warriors finished the regular season undefeated and ranked No. 12 in the BCS, earning a berth in the Sugar Bowl. This remains the only time the team has finished a regular season without a loss.
Individual legends have also defined the era. Tom Kaulukukui became the school's first All-American in 1935, and his No. Until Colt Brennan's number was chosen, 32 stood alone as the sole retired digit in the program. In 2021, number 15 was retired. From the early days of Honolulu Stadium to the 50,000-seat Aloha Stadium, the Rainbow Warriors have remained a central pillar of Hawaiʻi's sporting identity.
