The 1,490-ton railway gun Germany built to shatter the French Maginot Line

Hitler's Behemoth Railgun That Could Wipeout An Entire City - Schwerer Gustav · 9:06 · Video: Simple History · Watch at the source

In short: To bypass the formidable Maginot Line after World War I, German engineers developed the Schwerer Gustav. This massive artillery piece represents a peak in wartime engineering, showcasing the extreme lengths to which military planners went to overcome static defensive fortifications.

Developed by the German company Krupp, the Schwerer Gustav was designed to counter the massive defense network France constructed along its border with Germany. The weapon was a feat of engineering, weighing 1,490 tons and featuring a barrel nearly 107 feet long. It could fire 80 cm shells at targets up to 29 miles away.

Although the project cost 10 million Reichsmarks, Krupp provided the gun to the German military at no charge as a gesture of support for the war effort. The weapon drew on the company's prior experience with railway guns used in earlier conflicts, resulting in a colossal piece of artillery that remains a notable example of industrial-scale military development.
