In short: The House of Lorraine began as a regional power within the Holy Roman Empire. Through a strategic 1736 marriage to Maria Theresa of Austria, they transformed into the House of Habsburg-Lorraine, eventually providing four Holy Roman emperors and ruling the vast Austrian and Austro-Hungarian empires until 1918.

The origins of the House of Lorraine remain a subject of genealogical debate. One theory suggests Etichonid ancestry, a view widely accepted until the 20th century. However, modern research, supported by historians like Eduard Hlawitschka, increasingly favors a Gerardide connection. While the family's 11th-century lineage is certain, their earlier ancestry is obscured by fragmentary historical records and various dynastic claims.

The house's political trajectory was marked by significant shifts in power and territory. After the senior ducal line ended in 1431, the cadet branch of the Counts of Vaudémont reacquired the Duchy of Lorraine in 1473. This junior line navigated intense pressure from both the Holy Roman Empire and the Kingdom of France, even seeing a branch, the House of Guise, rise to prominence in French politics.

The most transformative moment occurred in 1736 when Francis of Lorraine married Maria Theresa of Austria. This union, and the subsequent success in the War of the Austrian Succession (1740–1748), merged the two houses. This new dynasty, the Habsburg-Lorraine, would go on to dominate European politics, with members including Joseph II, Leopold II, and Francis II serving as Holy Roman emperors from 1745 until the empire's dissolution in 1806.

The family's influence extended far beyond Lorraine. Through strategic marriages and inheritance, they controlled various territories, including the Grand Duchy of Tuscany and several Italian duchies like Parma and Modena. Even into the 19th century, the family's reach was global, exemplified by Archduke Maximilian's reign as Emperor of Mexico from 1863 to 1867.
