Rome was born from a defensive pact, not just a myth

In short: Forget the legend of twin brothers raised by a wolf. Archaeological evidence suggests Rome began as a pragmatic survival strategy: villagers joining together to repel an invasion. This shift from a small town to a regional power laid the groundwork for one of history's most resilient republics.

While oral traditions often cite 753 BC as the founding date, archaeological evidence points to a significant period of unification around 600 BC. During this era, the city-state likely formed as Latium villagers and settlers from surrounding hills joined forces to respond to an Etruscan invasion. It remains debated whether this union was a voluntary defensive pact or a result of being forced under Etruscan rule. Following this period of kings, Rome underwent a radical political transformation around 509 BC. The overthrow of the monarchy ushered in the Roman Republic, a system of public representation. While a small number of powerful families, known as gentes, monopolized the main magistracies, the Republic is considered one of the earliest examples of representative democracy. This new government featured two consuls who held executive and military powers, balanced by a Senate of appointed officials who served for life. The Republic was defined by a state of quasi-perpetual war. Rome first faced neighbors like the Gauls—who sacked the city in 387 BC—before expanding to conquer the entire Italian peninsula by 338 BC. By 146 BC, Rome had destroyed its greatest rival, Carthage, becoming the dominant maritime power in the Mediterranean. This era of expansion required constant adaptation, leading to the creation of new institutions like promagistracies to govern conquered provinces and the establishment of the 'Twelve Tables' in 451 BC to standardize laws.
