In short: When the Inca emperor Huayna Capac died around 1527, he left no clear successor. His sons, Huáscar and Atahualpa, plunged the empire into a devastating civil war. This internal conflict, compounded by European diseases, fractured the Inca state just as Spanish forces arrived to seize control of the Andes.

The conflict began in 1529, following the death of Huayna Capac, who likely succumbed to smallpox or malaria introduced by early Spanish explorers. Without a designated heir, the empire faced a power vacuum. Huáscar, based in the traditional capital of Cusco, claimed the throne and the support of the local nobility. Atahualpa, however, commanded the battle-hardened imperial armies in the north, where he had spent years accompanying his father on military campaigns.

The war was characterized by tactical maneuvering and extreme violence. Atahualpa’s generals, including Quizquiz and Chalcuchimac, proved superior in warcraft. After a series of battles, Atahualpa’s forces systematically dismantled Huáscar’s defenses. By January 1532, the northern army had annihilated Huáscar’s forces at Quipaipan, capturing the emperor and seizing Cusco. Atahualpa’s victory was absolute, but it left the empire exhausted and its population reeling from the combined impact of the war and rampant epidemics.

The timing of the conflict proved fatal for the Inca. As Atahualpa consolidated power, Francisco Pizarro arrived in Cajamarca in November 1532. Pizarro exploited the division, capturing Atahualpa during the Battle of Cajamarca. Even in captivity, Atahualpa ordered his brother’s execution to prevent a potential alliance with the Spanish. Pizarro later executed Atahualpa himself in August 1533. Historians note that this civil war was a critical factor in the rapid collapse of the Inca Empire, which saw an estimated 95 percent population decline over the following century due to war, disease, and conquest.
