Why the M4 Sherman was the ultimate workhorse of the Second World War

Inside An M4 Sherman Tank With Historian James Holland · 29:40 · Video: History Hit · Watch at the source

In short: Historian James Holland explores the interior of the iconic M4 Sherman tank. Discover why this vehicle became the most ubiquitous medium tank for the United States and Western Allies, balancing mechanical reliability with tactical maneuverability during the conflict.

Between 1942 and 1945, over 50,000 M4 Sherman tanks were produced. The tank was designed for ease of manufacture and maintenance, featuring a 75mm main gun alongside a .50 caliber machine gun and two .30 caliber machine guns. While it could not match the raw firepower or range of German Panther or Tiger tanks, its speed and rapid rate of fire made it a highly effective wartime asset.

The Sherman has recently gained renewed cultural prominence following the 2014 Hollywood film Fury, which featured actors Brad Pitt and Shia LaBeouf.
