A 1963 travelogue captures the vanishing rhythms of the Bakhtiari migration across Iran
In short: In April 1963, chemical engineer Watson Kintner filmed the Bakhtiari people on the move. His footage documents a traditional way of life, from livestock-heavy migrations along the Karoon River to the intricate construction of dhows. It is a rare, unedited window into a world of ancient craftsmanship and nomadic movement.
Watson Kintner, a pioneer in vacuum tube standardization at RCA, spent 36 years traveling to over 30 countries. His 1963 Iranian travelogue, consisting of 25 reels, serves as an extensive visual archive of mid-century Iranian life. Reel 16, filmed between April 22 and 24, specifically focuses on the Ahwaz region and the Karoon River, providing a detailed look at the Bakhtiari migration. The footage captures the immense scale of these movements, showing sheep, goats, donkeys, and cows traversing the landscape.
Beyond the migration, the film highlights the technical ingenuity of the era. Kintner documented the construction of dhows, noting the specific use of wooden nails and ribs, as well as the side supports used in local brick kilns. The reel also offers glimpses into domestic and defensive structures, including the Deybul fortress and various courtyard scenes. These observations are complemented by glimpses of daily survival, such as the use of clay fire trays and portable heating methods.
Kintner’s broader collection, spanning from April to May 1963, provides a comprehensive survey of the country’s diverse practices. From the pottery-making in Kashan to the high-density carpet weaving in Nain—which reached 100 knots per square centimeter—the films preserve a record of manual labor and traditional artistry. Whether capturing the architectural details of Persepolis or the humble tools used in village life, Kintner’s work remains a significant, if unedited, primary source for understanding the material culture of Iran before the rapid modernization of the late 20th century.
