A 1963 travelogue captures the vanishing hand-crafts of daily life in Isfahan, Iran
In short: In April 1963, chemical engineer Watson Kintner filmed the intricate rhythms of Isfahan. His footage reveals a world defined by hand-hammered copper, traditional shoe-making, and the manual ginning of cotton. These silent reels offer a rare, unedited window into the artisanal techniques that once anchored daily life in central Iran.
Watson Kintner, a pioneer in vacuum tube standardization at the Radio Corporation of America, spent 36 years documenting over 30 countries. His Iranian travelogues, filmed between 1933 and 1963, serve as a visual archive of a rapidly changing landscape. Reel 8, captured in Isfahan on April 9-10, 1963, focuses specifically on the domestic and industrial labor of the region, highlighting processes that relied on human dexterity rather than mechanization.
The footage provides a detailed look at the production of everyday goods. Kintner documented the creation of hand-hammered copper kettles, where the use of a foot-operated tool was noted, and the manual assembly of thread shoes. The film also records the labor-intensive nature of textile preparation, showing cotton being processed through crude hand-operated gins and polished over oven-holes. These scenes are interspersed with glimpses of broader infrastructure, such as the qanat water systems and traditional pigeon cotes.
Beyond the workshop, the reels capture the intersection of art and utility. Kintner filmed carpets designed in local art schools, brocades woven with gold and silver thread, and the baking of thin, flat bread. By documenting these specific, localized methods—from mending camel saddles to the intricate design of silver doors—the collection preserves a record of craftsmanship that was already beginning to shift. This archive remains a testament to the technical ingenuity and manual traditions that defined the Iranian experience in the mid-20th century.
