In short: While many associate Europe's Muslim communities with post-WW2 immigration, a much older story exists. From the medieval expansion of the Ottoman Empire to the ancient presence of Turkic groups in the Volga region, Islamic history is woven into the very fabric of the European continent.

The presence of Islam in Europe is not merely a recent phenomenon. While Western European Muslim populations largely formed following post-WW2 migrations, several regions possess centuries-scale histories. In the Balkans and the Caucasus, many communities are indigenous, with religious traditions dating back to the Middle Ages. This includes Muslim-majority nations such as Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Kosovo, alongside significant minorities in Bulgaria, Montenegro, and North Macedonia.

The historical expansion was multifaceted. In the 7th and 8th centuries, Islamic influence moved through the Caucasus and into the Iberian Peninsula via the Umayyad conquest. Later, the Ottoman Empire fundamentally reshaped Southeastern Europe between the 14th and 16th centuries, conquering territories including parts of the Serbian and Bulgarian empires, and the kingdoms of Bosnia, Croatia, and Hungary. This era also saw the spread of Islam through the movement of Turkic ethnic groups, such as the Tatars and Volga Bulgars, during the era of Mongol-led conquests in Eurasia.

The legacy of these shifts remains visible in the continent's political and cultural landscape. The Ottoman administrative system, which utilized land grants like the 'timar' to maintain a self-sufficient cavalry, once governed vast stretches of the Balkans. Even as empires eventually receded—such as the final disappearance of the Bosnian state in 1481—the religious and ethnic identities forged during these centuries continue to define the modern borders and cultural heritage of Eastern and Southern Europe.
