From MIT dropout to Hollywood icon: The intense career of James Woods
In short: Before he became a celebrated character actor known for his jittery, high-stakes performances, James Woods was an MIT undergraduate with ambitions of becoming an eye surgeon. He left academia to pursue acting, eventually earning two Academy Award nominations and two Primetime Emmy Awards across a prolific, decades-long career in film and television.
Born in Vernal, Utah, in 1947, James Woods initially studied at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he was active in the student theatre group Dramashop. He dropped out in 1969, just one semester before graduation, to chase a career in acting. His early professional years were defined by stage work, including a Broadway debut in 1969, and small film roles that eventually led to his breakthrough in the 1978 miniseries Holocaust.
Woods gained a reputation for portraying intense, unpredictable characters. His performance as Gregory Powell in The Onion Field (1979) earned him significant critical acclaim, with reviewers noting his ability to shift between murderous and fatherly personas. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, he delivered memorable turns in films like Videodrome (1983), Once Upon a Time in America (1984), and Salvador (1986), the latter of which earned him his first Academy Award nomination. His versatility extended to voice acting, most notably as Hades in Disney's Hercules (1997), a role he reprised across various media for years.
Beyond his acting, Woods has maintained a high-profile presence in American culture, marked by both professional accolades and frequent legal battles. He has been an outspoken political figure, shifting his party affiliation multiple times over the decades. His life outside the studio is equally varied; he is an avid poker player with numerous tournament successes and a dealer of antiques in Rhode Island. Even in recent years, his influence persists, such as his role as an executive producer on the 2023 film Oppenheimer, which was inspired by a book he helped bring to the attention of the production team.
