In short: Jessica Alves spent millions to transform her body into a living doll. But behind the 90 procedures lies a complex journey of body dysmorphic disorder, gender identity, and the physical toll of extreme cosmetic surgery, including the loss of her sense of smell.

Born in Brazil in 1983, Jessica Alves (formerly Rodrigo Alves) experienced a profound disconnect between her internal identity and external appearance from a very young age. Despite being assigned male at birth, Alves identified as female as early as age three. This internal conflict was exacerbated by childhood bullying and a hormone difference that caused atypical breast tissue growth. In an attempt to compensate for a perceived lack of masculine personality, Alves initially sought to make her appearance as masculine as possible through surgery, famously being dubbed a 'human Ken doll.'

The physical consequences of these transformations have been severe. A diagnosis of body dysmorphic disorder, a psychological state involving fixations on imagined physical imperfections, was given to Alves in 2013. Her surgeries have left lasting marks: twelve rhinoplasties resulted in a lost sense of smell, and a procedure to inject gel into her arms caused a temporary loss of use in both limbs, necessitating psychotherapy. In 2017, a surgeon on the series 'Botched' refused to perform further rhinoplasty, warning that Alves's nasal passages were blocked by scarring and she faced a risk of substantial necrosis.

In 2020, Alves transitioned publicly, undergoing breast augmentation, vaginoplasty, and feminization laryngoplasty. She estimated spending £1,000,000 on 90 procedures, including 51 plastic surgeries, to achieve her goal of looking like a 'human Barbie.' This journey highlights the intersection of extreme cosmetic intervention and the search for gender affirmation, illustrating the profound physical and psychological risks involved in the pursuit of a curated identity.
