How an NFL offensive lineman redefined consistency by reaching three consecutive Super Bowls
In short: Joe Thuney is a rare force in professional football, distinguished by his remarkable durability and versatility. He made history as the first player to open three consecutive seasons with a Super Bowl appearance. Beyond his physical reliability, Thuney balances elite athletic performance with academic achievement and strategic adaptability on the field.
Born in Centerville, Ohio, in 1992, Joe Thuney developed his craft at Archbishop Alter High School before joining the NC State Wolfpack. His collegiate career was defined by positional flexibility; he played center, right tackle, right guard, and left tackle, eventually becoming the school's first All-American offensive lineman since 1979. His commitment to excellence extended to the classroom, where he completed his degree in three years and later earned an MBA from Indiana University.
Thuney's professional trajectory began when the New England Patriots selected him in the 2016 NFL draft. He immediately secured the starting left guard position, playing every regular-season snap and helping the team reach the championship game in each of his first three years. His tenure with the Patriots included two Super Bowl victories. Known for his intelligence, he reportedly once tempered his performance on the Wonderlic Personnel Test to avoid appearing overly academic, a testament to his calculated approach to his career.
After signing with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2021, Thuney continued to anchor offensive lines, contributing to a Super Bowl LVII victory against the Philadelphia Eagles. His career reached new heights after a 2025 trade to the Chicago Bears, where he was named the inaugural NFL Protector of the Year. Throughout his journey, from his early days in Ohio to his status as a decorated veteran, Thuney has remained a cornerstone of every team he has joined, consistently demonstrating the ability to adapt to new roles under pressure.
