The only dog ever officially enlisted in the Royal Navy
In short: Most naval history is written in blood and iron, but one chapter involves a Great Dane with a penchant for mutton and train hopping. Just Nuisance wasn't just a mascot; he was a logistical nightmare who eventually forced the British military to grant him a formal rank.
Just Nuisance was a Great Dane born on April 1, 1937, who became a local celebrity in Simon’s Town, South Africa. Adopted at age one by Benjamin Chaney, the dog quickly proved he was not a conventional pet. During his first night in Chaney's home, Nuisance demonstrated high intelligence by independently opening the refrigerator to steal two pounds of mutton, an act that led Chaney to realize he was dealing with a dog of extraordinary capability.
While living at the United Services Institute, Nuisance formed a deep bond with naval ratings. He began to associate anyone in a sailor's uniform with friendship and food. His intelligence soon manifested as a rebellious streak: he discovered that sailors frequently took trains from Simon’s Town to Cape Town. Nuisance began 'illegally' catching these trains to join them, a feat that required the sailors to attempt to hide him from railway officials. Despite being frequently ejected by multiple officials, he would simply board the next available train.
The situation reached a crisis point when railway authorities threatened to put Nuisance down unless he was kept off their property. Faced with the impossibility of restraining him, Chaney prepared to sell the dog. However, the public outcry was so significant that sailors and locals flooded the Navy with pleas for a solution. This intervention led to the unique historical anomaly of Nuisance being officially enlisted into the Royal Navy, serving in HMS Afrikander between 1939 and 1944.
Nuisance's story, documented in Leslie M. Leslie M. Steyn's account of a 'dog's life' led by an able seaman offers a unique yet heartening portrayal of wartime connections between people and animals. He remains a singular figure in maritime history, representing a moment where the rigid structure of the Royal Navy yielded to the sheer personality of a clever Great Dane.
