The real Mikhail Kutuzov: Beyond the pages of Tolstoy's War and Peace
In short: Mikhail Kutuzov is famous as a character in Tolstoy's novel, but his actual life as a Russian field marshal remains largely overlooked. This biography explores the career of the man who led Russian armies against Napoleon in 1805 and 1812.
Born in 1747, Mikhail Illarionovich Golenishchev-Kutuzov entered military service at age twelve and remained in the profession until his death in 1813. Throughout his life, he navigated the entirety of the Russian military system, serving in nearly every capacity and branch imaginable.
While Tolstoy used Kutuzov to craft a specific vision of a historical figure, this modern biography provides the first comprehensive look at his actual life. Despite his pivotal role in the decisive 1812 showdown with Napoleon, Kutuzov has received surprisingly little scholarly attention until now.
