The 'Butcher' who redefined the ball-playing defender archetype
In short: Standing at just 5'9", Lisandro Martínez defies traditional scouting logic for center-backs. Known as "The Butcher" for his aggressive physical duels, he simultaneously possesses a technical range that allowed him to lead the Dutch Eredivisie in passing volume during his breakout season.
Martínez’s rise from Gualeguay to global stardom is a study in tactical versatility. While many defenders of his height might be overlooked, scouts at Ajax identified him as a "tough as nails" left-footed specialist capable of operating as a center-back, left-back, or defensive midfielder. This adaptability was proven during his three seasons in the Netherlands, where he won two Eredivisie titles and earned the club's Player of the Year award for the 2021–22 campaign.
His technical profile is particularly distinct; during that same 2021–22 season, he recorded more passes per game than any other player in the league. This ability to distribute from the back made him a primary target for Manchester United, who paid between £47 million and £49 million to secure his services in July 2022. At Old Trafford, his uncompromising style earned him comparisons to the legendary Nemanja Vidić, with Vidić himself acknowledging Martínez's leadership and defensive intensity.
On the international stage, Martínez has become a cornerstone of Argentina's golden era. He was a vital component of the squads that secured the 2021 Copa América, the 2022 Finalissima, and the 2022 FIFA World Cup. His career is marked by high-stakes contributions, including an essential block against Australia in the 2022 World Cup round of 16 and scoring his first international goal during the 2024 Copa América quarter-finals.
