The Knight of Hope: How a Brazilian military engineer became a communist revolutionary icon.
In short: Luís Carlos Prestes rose from a top-tier military student to a legendary rebel leader, marching 25,000 kilometers across the Brazilian interior. Later, as the long-serving general secretary of the Brazilian Communist Party, he navigated decades of imprisonment, exile, and shifting political alliances, leaving a complex legacy in South American history.
Born in 1898, Prestes excelled at the Military School of Realengo, graduating first in his class as an engineer. His path to revolution began with the 1924 tenentist revolt. Though he initially sought discharge to avoid violating his oath, he eventually joined the movement, becoming the chief of staff for the force known as the Prestes Column. For three years, this group traversed thirteen Brazilian states, resisting federal forces before eventually seeking exile in Bolivia in 1927.
During his exile, Prestes’s political orientation shifted toward Marxism. By the 1930s, he had moved to the USSR, returning to Brazil in 1934 to lead the National Liberation Alliance. His involvement in the failed 1935 uprising led to his imprisonment and the deportation of his wife, Olga Benário, to Nazi Germany, where she was killed. Despite this, Prestes remained a central figure in Brazilian politics, serving as a senator after his release in 1945 and leading the Brazilian Communist Party until 1980.
Prestes’s career was marked by profound contradictions. He supported Getúlio Vargas for the sake of national unity despite his own imprisonment under the Vargas regime. Later, he broke with the Communist Party leadership in the 1980s for allegedly abandoning Marxist-Leninist principles. By the time of his death in 1990 at age 92, he had lived through the rise and fall of the Soviet Union, remaining a polarizing but undeniably significant figure whose life spanned the most turbulent chapters of 20th-century Brazil.
