The Marshal who stood against the purges to save his own comrades
In short: Luo Ronghuan was a foundational figure in the Chinese Communist Party, rising to become one of the ten Marshals of the People's Republic. While known for his military leadership, his most significant act was a courageous intervention that halted a deadly campaign of mass executions within his own ranks.
Born in 1902 in Hunan Province, Luo Ronghuan followed a path that led him from studies in industry and commerce to the heart of the Chinese Communist Party. He was the only future Marshal to accompany Mao during the 1927 Autumn Harvest Uprising, later serving as security chief for the Red Army throughout the Long March. His early career was defined by his loyalty and his ability to navigate the complex ideological shifts of the era.
During the Second Sino-Japanese War, Luo served as a senior political officer for the 115th Division of the Eighth Route Army. In 1939, he took a decisive stand against the anti-Trotskyite purges occurring in the Shandong base area. By intervening, he successfully spared the lives of more than 100 party cadres. Although his efforts to fully stop the violence were initially met with limited success—as the campaign continued until 1942—his leadership in Shandong later allowed the Communist forces to expand their control over vital territory and communication lines, which proved decisive for the subsequent civil war.
Following the establishment of the People's Republic of China in 1949, Luo held high-ranking positions, including Chief of Staff of the People's Liberation Army. Declassified CIA records indicate that by June 1951, he was overseeing an espionage training facility in Beijing staffed by 300 trainees and 20 Soviet instructors. He was officially named a Marshal in 1955. When he passed away in 1963, his funeral was attended by Mao and Lin Biao, the latter of whom rarely made such appearances, underscoring Luo's unique stature within the party hierarchy.
