In short: In the late 1990s, Alex Ferguson traveled 14,000 miles to secure a Chilean sensation for Manchester United. But the deal collapsed when River Plate refused to sell. Discover the story of Marcelo Salas, the 'Matador' who became a global icon and a record-breaking transfer legend.

Marcelo Salas, known by nicknames such as 'Matador' and 'El Fenómeno,' rose to prominence in the 1990s as a clinical Chilean striker. His physical strength and technical left-footed finishing earned him comparisons to legends like Ronaldo and Gabriel Batistuta. His career was defined by a series of high-stakes transfers and massive valuations. In 1996, he moved to Argentina's River Plate, where he became a club icon, scoring 31 goals in 67 games and winning multiple titles, including the 1997 Supercopa Libertadores.

The peak of his market value arrived in 1998 when SS Lazio purchased him for US$20.5 million, making him the most expensive transfer in history at that time. During his five years in Italy, he helped Lazio end a long title drought, winning Serie A and the UEFA Cup Winners' and Super Cup. Despite interest from giants like Barcelona, Chelsea, and Arsenal, Salas famously rejected a US$30,000,000 move to Manchester United because River Plate would not release him.

However, his momentum was disrupted by injury. A torn ACL in October 2001 while playing for Juventus limited his impact in Turin, where he managed only 31 appearances and four goals. While his later years saw him return to River Plate and his original club, Universidad de Chile, his international legacy remained secure. He finished as Chile's all-time leading scorer with 37 goals for the national team, including a standout performance at the 1998 World Cup in France.
