In short: Often erased from history, Marsha P. Johnson was a black trans woman who became a foundational figure in the fight for LGBTQ+ rights. As a self-proclaimed drag mother, she provided for queer youth, co-founded the activist group STAR, and pushed for equality until her mysterious death in 1992.

Born in New Jersey in 1945, Marsha P. Johnson eventually moved to Greenwich, New York, where she found her identity as a drag queen. Known as the mayor of Christopher Street, she adopted the name 'Pay it no Mind' as a defiant response to a society that rejected her. Her life was defined by a radical generosity; she often acted as a 'drag mother' to disadvantaged queer youth, sharing what little she had despite her own struggles with mental health and the necessity of survival sex.

In 1972, Johnson co-founded Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries (STAR) alongside Sylvia Rivera, a radical group dedicated to supporting homeless queer youth. Her commitment to the cause was absolute, leading to over 100 arrests and even surviving a shooting. While popular myth often places her at the 1969 Stonewall Riots, this is incorrect; her true impact was in carrying the momentum of the movement through the 1970s and later pioneering AIDS activism in the 1980s, demanding that President Reagan address the crisis.

Johnson’s life ended in 1992 when her body was discovered in the Hudson River shortly after New York Pride. While authorities ruled it a suicide, many in her community suspected foul play, citing her identity as a black, queer woman. Despite her immense contributions to the Civil Rights and LGBTQ+ movements, her story was long sidelined. Today, she is increasingly recognized as a central figure whose life and advocacy remain essential to understanding the history of the fight for equality in America.
