The man who gave the Premier League its definitive voice
In short: Before the global explosion of the Premier League, football commentary was a regional craft. Martin Tyler didn't just narrate the game; he helped build the infrastructure of modern sports broadcasting, moving from a production role to become the primary voice of England's most-watched league.
Martin Tyler's path to the commentary booth was unconventional. In the 1970s, he worked behind the scenes on LWT's The Big Match in a production capacity. His major success happened nearly unintentionally; he submitted a tape of his personal commentary to his superiors. This led to his official debut on 28 December 1974, filling in for Gerry Williams at The Dell to describe a Second Division clash between Southampton and Sheffield Wednesday.
Throughout the 1980s, Tyler established himself as a staple of ITV, though he often found himself as the 'number two' commentator behind Brian Moore. This hierarchy eventually prompted a career shift. In 1990, at the urging of his agent, he joined British Satellite Broadcasting's Sports Channel. This move proved pivotal; when the channel merged with Sky to become Sky Sports in 1991, Tyler became the spearhead for the FA Premier League's coverage from its inception in 1992.
His influence extended far beyond the UK. Tyler became the primary voice for the Australian network SBS, covering eight World Cup tournaments. Between 2005 and 2020, he served as the primary voice for the FIFA gaming franchise. Even as he transitioned into coaching for various clubs under manager Alan Dowson, his legacy remains tied to the era of pay-TV football, where he was voted the Premier League Commentator of the Decade in 2003.
Tyler's career reflects the evolution of sports media from terrestrial television to satellite and digital platforms. He navigated the transition from local ITV regions like Yorkshire and Granada to international feeds for Serie A and the UEFA Champions League, eventually retiring from Sky Sports in 2023 after 33 years of service.
