Michelangelo famously despised the process of painting the Sistine Chapel ceiling. This video explores the artist's meticulous planning and the physical toll of his work, from initial sketches to the monumental frescoes that define the Renaissance.
While celebrated as a master of the human form, Michelangelo viewed himself primarily as a sculptor. This video follows curator Grant Lewis through the artist's preparatory process, examining the sketches and cartoons used to conceptualize both the ceiling and the massive altar wall.
The scale of these works was immense. After a four-year struggle with the ceiling, Michelangelo returned 25 years later to paint the Last Judgment. At age 61, the task proved even more perilous; the artist even suffered a fall from the scaffolding while working on the massive wall.
