Can a herd of handmade wooden tables behave like living creatures?
In short: Artist Douglas Repetto invited museum visitors to construct small, walking tables from scrap wood and mechanical components. This project culminated in a public performance where these mechanical creatures were released into the Penn Museum to roam and interact with their environment.
During the 2012 Philadelphia Fringe Festival, participants collaborated to build a collection of 'foals'—small, mobile sculptures powered by basic mechanics. At 4:00 pm on September 16, 2012, this herd was released into the Chinese Rotunda of the Penn Museum.
The performance extended beyond the gallery, as the mechanical herd moved into the Warden Garden to navigate the fountains and grass. Following the event, attendees were given the opportunity to adopt these 'deviant' creations, blurring the line between inanimate objects and living, frolicking entities.
