In short: Founded as a social movement in 2011, Morena rapidly evolved from a fringe organization into the dominant power in Mexican politics. By championing anti-corruption and energy nationalism, it secured a historic landslide victory in 2024, electing the nation's first female president and reshaping the country's entire legislative landscape.

Morena, or the National Regeneration Movement, began as a social project led by Andrés Manuel López Obrador in 2011. Initially designed to monitor electoral integrity across Mexico’s municipalities, the movement formalized its structure in 2012 before officially registering as a national political party in 2014. To achieve this legal status, the organization successfully mobilized approximately 220,000 citizens, meeting the strict requirement of securing 0.26 percent of the national electoral roll.

The party’s platform is rooted in left-wing ideology, specifically emphasizing energy nationalism, the protection of labor unions, and a staunch opposition to neoliberal economic policies. By framing corruption as a lingering byproduct of the neoliberal era, Morena built a broad coalition that attracted defectors from established parties, most notably the Party of the Democratic Revolution (PRD). This consolidation of political support allowed the party to secure a two-thirds majority in Congress by 2019, granting it the power to pass constitutional amendments.

The party’s electoral trajectory culminated in 2024, when candidate Claudia Sheinbaum won the presidency with nearly 60 percent of the popular vote—the most significant margin in the history of Mexican presidential elections. Following this victory, the party underwent a leadership transition in September 2024, appointing Luisa María Alcalde as president. Today, Morena continues to define its ideological stance and long-term strategy through biennial national congresses, maintaining its influence as the primary force in Mexican governance.
