In short: Muhammad Ali Pasha arrived in Egypt to expel Napoleon but stayed to forge a regional superpower. By transforming the military and challenging the Ottoman Sultan, he established a ruling house that navigated British occupation, nationalist revolutions, and shifting titles for nearly 150 years before the 1953 republican revolution.

Born in Kavala, Greece, Muhammad Ali was an Albanian commander sent to Egypt after the French withdrawal. He rose to power in 1805, forcing the Ottoman Sultan to recognize him as Wāli, or governor. Driven by the belief that the Ottoman Empire was collapsing, he sought to replace it with his own vast kingdom. His military reforms were radical, with roughly four percent of the population serving in the army, allowing him to conquer Sudan and threaten the Ottoman heartland itself.

His ambitions were checked by the Great Powers during the Oriental Crisis of 1840, which forced him to abandon his march on Constantinople and retreat to African territories. His grandson, Isma'il the Magnificent, later secured official recognition of the Khedive title in 1867 through diplomacy and bribery. However, this autonomy proved fragile. In 1879, the Sultan deposed Isma'il under pressure from European powers, and by 1882, the United Kingdom had occupied Egypt, reducing the Khedive to a figurehead while real power shifted to the British High Commissioner.

The dynasty’s relationship with Britain remained volatile. During World War I, the British deposed Abbas II for siding with the Central Powers, turning Egypt into a protectorate. Although Britain recognized Egyptian independence in 1922, interference persisted, particularly regarding control over Sudan. The reign of King Farouk I eventually collapsed under the weight of corruption, the 1948–1949 Palestine War, and intense nationalist fervor. Following the 1952 revolution, the monarchy was abolished in 1953, ending the era of the House of Kavala.
