How a frontier warlord rose to become the decisive military force of his age.
In short: This video examines the ascent of Nader Shah, a commander who emerged from obscurity to rescue a crumbling Persian state. It details the collapse of the Safavid Empire and the tactical brilliance that allowed Nader to transform local skirmishes into a disciplined, professional army.
At the dawn of the 18th century, the Safavid Empire faced total implosion due to economic strain, political fracturing, and weak leadership. When Afghan revolts ignited along the eastern borders and the state surrendered in 1722, Nadergulu of the Afsharid Qizilbash stepped into the resulting power vacuum. Forged by a life of frontier warfare and raids, Nader began consolidating power by crushing resistance and rewarding those who submitted to his authority.
As he aligned with the Safavid pretender Shah Tahmasp II, Nader navigated a landscape of betrayal to become a kingmaker and commander. His rise culminated in the 1729 Battle of Herat, where his emphasis on firepower and tactical discipline fundamentally shifted the regional balance of power. His military success during this period is often compared to the achievements of Alexander the Great and Napoleon.
