In short: From the battlefields of the Civil War to the final campaigns of the American Indian Wars, Nelson A. Miles was a central figure in U.S. military history. He commanded forces across vast territories, oversaw the transition of army leadership, and led a decisive, swift invasion of Puerto Rico.

Nelson A. Miles rose to prominence through a long and varied military career that spanned the American Civil War and the subsequent conflicts on the Great Plains. During the late 19th century, he became a key commander in the U.S. Army's efforts to relocate Native American tribes to government agencies. His campaigns were marked by relentless pursuit, such as the effort to force the Lakota and their allies onto reservations following the events at Little Big Horn, and his interception of the Nez Perce band led by Chief Joseph in the Montana Territory.

Beyond his role in the Indian Wars, Miles was a significant figure in the Spanish-American War. In 1898, he directed a force of approximately 3,500 soldiers in a landing at Guánica, Puerto Rico. The campaign was notable for its brevity, lasting only until August 12, and for the minimal military resistance encountered by the U.S. troops. This operation demonstrated the shifting focus of American military power at the turn of the century, moving from internal frontier pacification to international projection.

Miles also navigated the complex internal politics of the military. He was involved in attempts to manage tensions on Lakota lands, notably hoping to avoid violence when removing the Hunkpapa leader Sitting Bull. However, his efforts were often complicated by the actions of other officials, such as McLaughlin, who bypassed his strategy by sending tribal police to the leader's cabin in December. Throughout his tenure, Miles remained a controversial and influential officer, eventually serving as the final Commanding General of the United States Army before the structure of the military high command was reorganized in 1903.
