In short: Launched in June 1944, Operation Bagration was the largest defeat in German military history. By mastering the art of deception and deep battle, the Red Army obliterated Army Group Centre, forcing Nazi Germany to fight a two-front war and setting the stage for the final push toward Berlin.

Operation Bagration, which ran from 22 June to 19 August 1944, was a strategic masterclass in Soviet military planning. While the German High Command (OKH) anticipated a summer offensive, they were convinced the main blow would fall against Army Group North Ukraine. This miscalculation was no accident; it was the result of a sophisticated Soviet deception campaign known as maskirovka. By creating a crisis in Byelorussia while simultaneously leaving powerful tank formations in the L'vov area, the Soviets successfully manipulated German intelligence, drawing vital mobile reserves away from the central sector.

The operation relied on the theory of 'deep battle,' which prioritized breaking through tactical zones to allow mechanized forces to penetrate the enemy's strategic depth. When the offensive began, the Red Army utilized an unprecedented artillery bombardment to flatten German defenses. The results were catastrophic for the Wehrmacht. By 28 June, the German 4th Army was destroyed, and the 3rd Panzer and 9th Armies were largely shattered. The Soviet advance was so rapid that German commanders, bound by Hitler’s rigid 'Feste Plätze' (fortified town) orders, found themselves unable to execute a mobile defense, leading to the encirclement and destruction of entire corps, including the 28,000-man LIII Corps at Vitebsk.

The scale of the collapse was immense, with approximately 450,000 German casualties. The operation not only liberated Byelorussia but also enabled subsequent offensives that reached the Vistula River and the outskirts of Warsaw. This success was supported by significant logistical aid, including over 220,000 trucks provided by the United States. Ultimately, Bagration proved that the Soviet Union could coordinate massive strategic movements across multiple fronts, leaving the German military command confused and wrong-footed until it was far too late to recover.

The operation also highlighted the complex political reality of the Eastern Front. While the Red Army advanced, the Polish Home Army attempted to cooperate tactically under Operation Tempest, hoping to secure power in liberated territories. These efforts were largely thwarted as Soviet forces frequently turned against their Polish allies, leading to widespread imprisonment and death. By the end of the campaign, the Soviet Union had not only reclaimed its 1941 borders but had positioned itself within striking distance of the German capital, effectively sealing the fate of the Third Reich.
