In short: How does a company become the fourth-largest telecommunications provider in the United States? It wasn't just organic growth; it was a multi-billion dollar series of strategic acquisitions and rebranding maneuvers that unified regional networks into a national powerhouse under a single corporate identity.

Optimum Communications (formerly Altice USA) reached its current scale through a series of aggressive acquisitions led by French–Israeli businessman Patrick Drahi. A pivotal moment occurred in 2015 when the Netherlands-based Altice NV entered the U.S. the nation's 7th-biggest cable firm, Suddenlink Communications, was bought for $9.1 billion to gain market share. This was followed by a massive $17.7 billion acquisition of Cablevision from the Dolan family, which closed in June 2016. These moves allowed the company to establish a dominant presence in the New York metropolitan area and across several Midwestern and Southern states.

The transition to the 'Optimum' brand was a deliberate multi-year rollout. While the brand originally originated from Cablevision, it was extended to Suddenlink's systems in 2022. The company underwent a significant structural shift in 2018 when it was spun off from Altice as an independent entity, though Drahi retained control. This independence was paired with a public offering in June 2017 that raised $2.2 billion. To further expand its footprint, the company acquired Morris Broadband in North Carolina for $310 million in 2021, eventually folding it into the Optimum brand.

Beyond infrastructure, the company's history is marked by high-stakes carriage disputes that threatened to leave millions without content. These included a narrow escape from a blackout of Disney-owned stations like WABC-TV and WPVI-TV in October 2017, and a notable dispute with Starz that resulted in a temporary removal of channels in early 2018. Today, the company operates a diverse portfolio including fiber-to-the-home services, mobile networks, and specialized business services, serving over 375,000 businesses across 21 states.

The evolution culminated in a corporate name unification in November 2025, when Altice USA officially changed its name to Optimum Communications. This move aligned the corporate identity with its primary service brand, completing a decade-long journey of consolidation and rebranding.
