How private armies for landlords became Sicily's most notorious criminal empire

In short: Long before it was a global symbol of organized crime, the Mafia began as a collection of hired enforconts. Born from the lawless estates of Sicily, these private armies eventually turned on their employers to establish an alternative legal system that would dominate the region for centuries.

The origins of the Sicilian Mafia, or Cosa Nostra, are rooted in the volatile landscape of 19th-century Italy. While some scholars debate the exact timeline, many agree the organization emerged during Italy's unification. The group's ancestors were the 'mafie'—small, private armies employed by absentee landlords to defend their estates from bandits during periods of widespread lawlessness in Sicily.

The transition from protector to predator was a gradual evolution of power. These energetic ruffians eventually organized themselves into a structured hierarchy, becoming powerful enough to turn against the very landowners who hired them. They began extorting money from landlords in exchange for protecting crops, effectively becoming the sole law on many estates. Over time, their services expanded from simple enforcement to include the mediation of disputes and the oversight of agreements.

By the 20th century, these groups had evolved from feudal enforcers into administrators of a shadow legal system that governed much of the regional economy. Today, the organization is a complex hierarchy of 'families' or 'cosche.' Each clan operates within a specific territory, such as a village or town, and is led by a boss elected for a one-year term. This structure is supported by underbosses and counselors, and even includes commissions to oversee activity across entire provinces.

The true internal mechanics of this system remained largely a mystery to the outside world until 1984. That year, former member Tommaso Buscetta turned government witness, revealing the intricate governance and territorial rules that had previously been subject to mere guesswork.
