Can a royal family exist without a throne, a country, or even a surname?
In short: Born into exile just months after a military coup, Pavlos, the former Crown Prince of Greece, has spent decades navigating a life defined by the loss of his nation's monarchy. Now, after his citizenship was stripped and later reinstated, he faces new debates over his identity and his family's place in history.
Pavlos was born in 1967 at the Tatoi Palace, the son of King Constantine II and Queen Anne-Marie. His early life was marked by political instability; within months of his birth, a military junta seized power, and his father’s failed counter-coup forced the royal family into a decades-long exile. Although the Greek monarchy was officially abolished in 1973 and confirmed by a 1974 referendum, the family remained a prominent, if displaced, fixture of European royalty. For years, they lived in London, where Pavlos was educated and eventually pursued a career in finance, co-founding the activist hedge fund Ortelius Advisors.
The legal status of the family became a point of intense friction in 1994, when the Greek government passed law 2215/1994, stripping Pavlos and his relatives of their citizenship. The law mandated that any restoration of status required the adoption of an explicit surname—a condition the family long resisted, as they preferred to use the title 'of Greece.' This tension persisted until December 2024, when Pavlos and his siblings finally applied for citizenship, choosing the surname 'Ντε Γκρες' (De Grèce).
The reinstatement of their citizenship sparked immediate controversy. Critics, including constitutional law experts, argued that 'De Grèce' is not a legitimate surname but rather a title of origin, potentially violating the Greek Constitution's stance on aristocratic titles. Despite these legal battles and the loss of their official role, Pavlos maintains that he seeks no political power. Instead, he describes his mission as upholding his family's legacy, acting as a custodian of a history that remains deeply intertwined with the modern Greek state, even as the country remains a republic.
