In short: In 1970, twelve-year-old Peter Ostrum traveled to Munich to star in a cinematic classic. While most child stars chase fame, Ostrum turned down a three-film contract to pursue a life of veterinary medicine, eventually trading the silver screen for the quiet work of a large animal doctor.

After being discovered by talent agents while performing in a Cleveland theater, Peter Ostrum underwent a whirlwind audition process. Within months of his initial Polaroid photos and reading tests, he was in New York for screen tests—where he sang 'My Country, 'Tis of Thee'—and was soon preparing for a flight to West Germany. For five months in 1970, the young actor lived in Munich, an experience he later likened to being an exchange student. During this time, he worked alongside Gene Wilder, a mentor who taught him the nuances of the film business.

Despite the success of *Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory*, Ostrum’s connection to the industry was fleeting. At age thirteen, he declined a three-film contract from producer David L. Wolper, a decision driven by a desire to retain the freedom to choose his own roles. While he briefly explored acting again during his senior year of high school, he ultimately decided against a professional career in theater. He even spent years avoiding the spotlight, at one point telling people his brother had been the star of the film.

His true calling emerged from a fascination with his family's horses and the veterinarian who cared for them. After a hiatus spent grooming horses in Pennsylvania, Ostrum earned his Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from Cornell University in 1984. He spent his career working with large animals like cows and horses, eventually retiring from the Countryside Veterinary Clinic in New York in late 2023. Though he occasionally receives small royalty payments—roughly $8 to $9 every three months—his legacy remains rooted in the quiet dignity of his chosen profession.
