In short: While she broke fashion history by debuting the white wedding dress, Philippa of England was far from a mere fashion icon. A daughter of England and Queen of the Kalmar Union, she became a de facto ruler of Sweden, a diplomat to the Hanseatic League, and a heroine of the Copenhagen defense.

Born in 1394 to King Henry IV of England, Philippa was married by proxy in 1405 to Eric of Pomerania, the ruler of the Kalmar Union (Denmark, Norway, and Sweden). In 1406, she made history as the first documented princess to wear a white wedding dress—a tunic with a cloak of white silk bordered with grey squirrel and ermine. While her marriage was a strategic alliance, her role quickly evolved from consort to a powerful political actor.

Philippa was exceptionally influential in Swedish affairs. Because she held immense dower lands including Stockholm and Uppsala, she acted as Eric's proxy in Sweden, where she was often considered more efficient than her husband. She mediated noble disputes, presided over the Council of the Estates, and even secured funding for the Dano-Hanseatic War against the opposition of the Swedish people. Her diplomatic reach was so significant that she successfully negotiated a new coin system convention with the Hanseatic League in 1424.

Her leadership was tested during the 1428 bombardment of Copenhagen. She organized the city's defense against the Hanseatic fleet, rallying the citizens and earning the title of heroine. Despite her military and political prowess, her reign was marked by personal hardship; she suffered a stillbirth in 1429, which led to her death in 1430 at age 35. She remains a rare figure in the Kalmar Union who maintained high popularity across multiple kingdoms, particularly in Sweden, where she was praised as a stabilizing contrast to Eric's leadership.
