When a throne's vacancy invited an empire to step in
In short: In the early 17th century, Russia faced a vacuum of power so profound it nearly erased the state. As internal chaos and famine ravaged the land, the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth moved in, turning a domestic crisis into a high-stakes geopolitical struggle for the soul of Eastern Europe.
The 'Time of Troubles' began following the death of Fyodor Rurik in 1598. His successor, Boris Godunov, struggled to maintain order against famine (1601–03), boyar opposition, and the rise of the 'False Dmitry'—a pretender claiming to be the legitimate heir to the throne. When Godunov died in April 1605, a mob installed the False Dmitry as tsar, only for him to be assassinated by boyars in May 1606. This cycle of instability led to the rise of Vasily Shuysky, whose rule was quickly undermined by peasant revolts and further pretenders.
External intervention became a defining feature of this era. The Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth launched military campaigns that brought Moscow to the brink of catastrophe. These efforts included the ambitions of Prince Władysław and the actions of Zaporozhian Cossacks led by Hetman Sagaidachny. The conflict was not merely a border dispute; it was an attempt to reshape Russian governance, involving the siege of key fortresses and significant military pressure on the defense of Smolensk.
While foreign interference deepened social and economic disruptions, particularly in central and southern Russia, it also triggered an unexpected defensive reaction. The threat of Polish dominance provoked the unification of popular militias. These grassroots movements ultimately managed to defend the country's independence against external forces. This period fundamentally shaped the subsequent relations between the two great powers and established a precedent for how internal instability can invite foreign conquest.
